Newsletter for July & August 2018
Last year, when I reached the statutory retirement age of 75 years, I submitted my retirement to the Cardinal who asked me to stay on for at least another year. This I have done, and after much thought and heart searching I have decided to retire this summer after seventeen years as your parish priest. It has been a hard decision to make but there comes a time when you seem to know the time is right. As I said in church, you feel it in your bones, both figuratively and literally.
The years have simply come and gone but they have been years of happiness and fulfilment for me in service as your parish priest. I shall always be grateful for all your love and for your many kindnesses to me. I shall not be going far. The Diocese has found me a small flat in Cadogan Street SW3 to which I shall be moving in late August.
My last Sunday will be the 2nd of September.
NEW PARISH PRIEST
I am to be succeeded by Canon Paschal Ryan who comes to the parish fresh from sabbatical leave. Before that he served as a parish priest in a number of places and had a number of other important assignments which I shall let him tell you about. I have known him for a very long time and I am delighted that he is coming.
I am sure you will give him a very warm welcome. I shall be whatever help I can during the handover sessions.
FIRST HOLY COMMUNIONS
On Saturday 9th June we celebrated the Reception of their First Holy Communion by the children of our parish. This is always a special day, full of emotion, but full of Faith too. I congratulate the children, their parents, god-parents, and grandparents.
I would like to thank the catechists Anna Cosio, Anne-Laure de Orleans-Bourbon Patti Fordyce, Sarah Kisielewska, Helena Letman and Leticia Simmonet who have devoted their Tuesday evenings over the past year in the careful instruction of our children. I know how pleased the parents have been with the result, and the children too. May I take this opportunity to thank the parents for the gift of flowers for the sanctuary for the First Communion Mass.
You can see a selection of photographs of the First Holy Communion Day by going to www.holyredeemerchelsea.com.
On 8th June the following received the Sacrament of Confirmation together with teenagers from St Mary’s Parish Cadogan Street at St Mary’s Church: Alfonso Mendez de Vigo Hohenberg, Clara Treherne and Eduardo di Vincenzo. Auxiliary Bishop John Wilson presided. We offer congratulations to the teenagers together with their families and sponsors.
