Newsletter for March 2018

Lent continues and Holy Week is not far away. We celebrate it at the end of the month and Easter Sunday is 1st April. In Holy Week the Church celebrates the mysteries of salvation accomplished by Christ in the last days of his earthly life, from his messianic entry into Jerusalem until his blessed Passion and glorious Resurrection. Lent continues until Maundy Thursday. A separate leaflet will be printed giving all the times of the Holy Week and Easter ceremonies.

This Mass will be celebrated at Westminster Cathedral on Saturday 10th March at 2.30pm. All welcome.

Cardinal Vincent Nichols invites all those couples in the Diocese who are celebrating 5th, 10th, 25th, 30th, 40th, 50th and 60th wedding anniversaries. The Mass will be at Westminster Cathedral on Saturday 19th May at 3pm. He asks for numbers of those intending to go. Please ring the office, email, or hand in at the Rectory the following details: husband and wife’s names, wedding date, full postal address and email or telephone number. During the liturgy the couples will be invited, in a simple way, to renew their marital commitment and there will be prayers for them and their families. Families who have experienced pain and suffering will be recalled and prayed for.

One of the Church’s major concerns is for justice and peace in our troubled world. The Diocese has a Justice and Peace Commission, which exists to promote action and reflection on peace and social justice in parishes in the light of the Gospel and Catholic Social Teaching. Most parishes have one but not this one. Is there anyone who would like to represent the parish and keep us aware of what’s going on? Please have a word with me or ring the office.

The Bishops want to hear from you! Cardinal Vincent Nichols and the auxiliary Bishops of the Diocese are inviting Catholic young adults, aged 18 to 30, to meet with them to discuss the theme of the next Synod of Bishops “Young People, the Faith and Vocational Discernment’. In particular they would like to hear from you about how you see your place in the world, how faith impacts your life, and how the Church may best accompany you as you work out God’s plan for your own life. The Cardinal is holding a meeting at Archbishop’s House, Ambrosden Avenue, SW1P 1QJ on Wednesday 7th March from 6.30pm to 8.30pm and you will be welcome. Don’t be shy.

This is a Catholic day and boarding school in George Road, Kingston upon Thames. One of our parishioners is a Governor there. There will be an OPEN DAY on Saturday 10th March from 10am until noon. The contact at the school is Mrs Cheryl Eysele, Director of Admissions ( Flyers and poster in the porch.

'Adoremus', the Eucharistic Congress to be held in Liverpool from 7th to 9th September is an initiative of the Bishops' Conference. It is an important event, since the last Eucharistic Congress in England was held in 1908. There will be a range of activities centred on the Eucharist, and participants are welcome to attend for a day or for the whole three days, which will culminate in a Eucharistic Procession through the streets. The parish will have an allocation of tickets, and anyone wishing to attend should contact Patti Fordyce as soon as possible via the parish office.

This retreat is for adult men, single or married, of any age. It will be directed by a priest and a lay man from Opus Dei. Meditations and talks will be given on the central themes of the Catholic Faith. To be held at the Catholic National Shrine of Our Lady at Walsingham. For more information go to

In his recent Pastoral Letter the Cardinal spoke of the need to support key areas of work in our Diocese, and which his appeal is directed to support. They are: Marriage and Family Life, Youth and Evangelisation and the Church’s Outreach within Civil Society. These mission areas embody how we live out the Gospel and put our Catholic values in service to others through practical programmes. Please take a Cardinal’s

Appeal donation leaflet as you leave Mass today. During Lent, and in the spirit of sacrifice, sharing and almsgiving, please consider designating your Lenten sacrifice to the Cardinal’s Appeal. Thank you.
